FAQ's
Frequently asked questions:
Why can’t we continue to send people to Vancouver?
As the baby-boomer population ages more demand is put on hospitals throughout the country. “Outside” hospitals expect that our hospital can provide a basic standard of health care. Specialists can make better decisions for Yukon patients if they have more accurate diagnosis and can fast-track patients in need.
Why does the Hospital need to ask the public for part of the money required to buy “urgently-needed” equipment? Shouldn’t the government pay for it?
The Yukon government has done an excellent job defending health care dollars for Yukon. However, as is the case with most hospitals in Canada, the basic equipment needs at our hospital are greater than what government is able to provide.
Government has many demands on its budget and because medical technology changes so quickly, equipment can become outdated quite quickly as well. It is not possible for government to keep up with the need, without community support.
What is the role of Yukon Hospital Foundation?
Yukon Hospital Foundation is a registered charity and public foundation under the Income Tax Act. As the fund raising arm of the Yukon Hospital Corporation, the Foundation focuses fund raising expertise,
resources and experience to organize and implement programs that raise money to advance health care at our hospital.
Why is a fund raising campaign necessary?
Most hospitals are now supported through fund raising. Communities throughout Canada take on the responsibility to support the building, maintaining and equipping of their hospitals. Government funding provides operating funds and a percentage of capital building costs.
How do I know my donation isn't spent on operating funds?
The Yukon Hospital Foundation is a registered public foundation and the Yukon Hospital Corporation is a registered charitable organization. As such we are governed by the rules and regulations of the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. We must provide proof that funds contributed are used for the purposes for which they were intended. The Yukon government provides funds to operate the hospital. Donors will receive regular updates regarding the status of the projects and how their donations are being used.
Who will be invited to contribute?
Everyone in our region relies on, Whitehorse General Hospital, therefore we will be asking individuals and businesses with interests in the Yukon to contribute to the advancement of our hospital. We are inviting everyone to make a thoughtful and proportionate pledge to the Campaign.
How will my contribution be recognized?
All donors will be recognized in a thoughtful and appropriate way. Naming and special dedication opportunities are available. Foundation staff would be pleased to discuss opportunities with donors.
